Gangtok District Court Jobs 2024: According to the Code of Criminal Procedure (1973), “local jurisdiction” refers to the geographical area within which a court, judge, or magistrate can exercise its powers. In Sikkim, the state government through a 1994 notification divided the state into two session divisions: one for the East and North districts and the other for the South and West districts, with headquarters at Gangtok.
The first sessions judge (East and North) was appointed in July 1994, with jurisdiction over the entire East and North districts. Similarly, the Chief Judicial Magistrate (East and North) had jurisdiction over these districts. In contrast, the Judicial Magistrate (East) had jurisdiction over the East district only, and the Judicial Magistrate (North) had jurisdiction over the North district only.
